Patchwork Garden at the Ottawa Folk Festival
Something new at the Ottawa Folk Festival this year was the Patchwork Garden. As a member of the Master Gardeners of Ottawa Carleton, I was excited to be able to plant up a box (Box 18 below) for the garden. During the festival, there was a silent auction and the boxes were sold. When I left the festival on Saturday night, there had been 5 bids on my box and the highest was at $25.00. Hopefully the bids continued during the day on Sunday.

Ottawa Folk Festival 2009
Doug and I headed down to the Ottawa Folk Festival on Saturday to hear one of our favourite musicians, Ray Bonneville. He is from Quebec but has been living and working in Austin, Texas and we rarely get a chance to hear him. A real treat!

We also had a chance to hear Bruce Cockburn - what a great guitar player - he played non-stop for over an hour and a half thrilling the audience.
Although I don't have a photo, we also heard a great band from Whitby/Toronto - three young women called the Good Lovelies. They told the audience they had quit their day jobs 15 months ago to hit the road with their music. Gutsy bunch of gals, great music dished up with a sense of humour - I'm already looking forward to the next chance we get to hear them!

Habitat update
How exciting! My little back yard which I so carefully planned and planted for birds and wildlife has been accepted by the Canadian Wildlife Federation as a Certified Backyard Habitat. Although only in its second year, it is growing well and the birds, squirrels, raccoons, and pollinators are all enjoying it.

Doug's 65th Birthday
Doug celebrated his 65th birthday last night and we had a great time! He decided to blow his first Old Age Security cheque on a party and preparations started earlier in the week with a beer haul from across the border.
The party was at our place and according to the guest book, 90 people dropped in to enjoy and share great music and friendship. Thanks to all our friends for joining us to celebrate Doug's special day and for sharing your music with us!

check out the candles!
Souper Jazz in Orillia, Ontario
Sorry I've been a bit delayed in updating my blog - summer is short and there is always something keeping us busy. Last weekend we travelled to Orillia where the Souper Jazz Band had a gig at the Geneva Park YMCA Conference Centre. Wow, it was quite a place and we had a great time and great accommodations and meals. It was a treat.
On the way out next morning we drove by Casino Rama and I enjoyed the native art on the exterior casino walls. The casino is owned and operated by the Chippewas of Rama, Mnjikaning First Nation.
The drive home was leisurely with a stop over in Picton where we enjoyed a visit to a craft show, Sandbanks Winery and a hotel room with a balcony with a view of the marina.
